Our Fleet

Though we started with just one vehicle back in 1982, Salem Trolley's fleet has expanded, allowing us to run our regular tour route, provide transportation for events, and even add a second trolley for each if need be.

The Derby
The Derby was named after Elias Haskett Derby. He was America's first millionaire, born in Salem in 1739. Derby made his fortune from the shipping business he inherited from his father. He went on to engage in privateering during the American Revolution and to own one of the first ships to reach Asian ports, though he himself never went to sea.

The Derby holds 36 passengers. It has zippered, roll-up windows in the back allowing for the free flow of air.

The Conant
Named after Roger Conant, the founder of Gloucester, Salem and Beverly. Conant received a fishing charter for the region known as Naumkeag from King Philip. Eventually, a thriving community grew up around those first cod racks on Winter Island and became Salem. A statue erected in honor of Roger Conant can be seen in front of the Salem Witch Museum, opposite The Salem Common.

The Conant holds 34 passengers. It has zippered, roll-up windows in the back allowing for the free flow of air.

The Bowditch Handicapped Symbol.
The Bowditch was named after Nathaniel Bowditch who was born and raised in Salem. He was a self-educated genius. He taught himself several languages by comparing foreign language Bibles with the English version. He was a mathematician, mariner and astronomer, and his New American Practical Navigator is still used by modern day mariners.

The Bowditch is one of our handicapped assessable trolleys and holds 38 passengers without wheelchairs or 34 passengers with 2 wheelchairs. It has zippered, roll-up windows in the back allowing for the free flow of air.

The Hawthorne
Our newest trolley was named after Nathaniel Hawthorne, a 19th century writer and Salem native, who wrote such stories as The House of Seven Gables , The Scarlet Letter , and Young Goodman Brown . Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 in Salem. He married Sophia Peabody also of Salem, whose home still stands around the corner from our business office!

The Hawthorne is a modern 2006 steel trolley, and replaces its namesake, a 1982 wooden trolley, which had reliably served the company since its inception in 1982. The new vehicle is available in two configurations: a transit style holding 32 passengers; or a forthcoming wedding configuration which holds 28 passengers. Like the rest of the fleet, The Hawthorne is heated and has roll-up windows in the back allowing for the free-flow of air.
